Kali-Eskrima,
involes the use of one or two fighting sticks, and/or bare-handed technique to overcome an oppenent. Relies on speed and technique
rather than strength. Did You Know??? Bruce Lee's last movie Game of Death features the use of Filipino stickfighting?
Unfortunately, he died before being able to spread more awareness of the art and its various systems. Actor Matt Damon
also trained in Kali, another name for Filipino martial arts, in order to prepare for his role in the Bourne Identity movie
triology.
Eskrima, Kali, Arnis the only known traditional Filipino martial art, has roots deep in the culture and
history of the Filipino people. Though the exact date of its origin remains unclear, historical evidence suggest that this
art of self defense - involving the use of long and short sticks, a dagger or other blunt instruments - undoubtedly existed
long before the arrival of the first Spanish colonizers in the country.
Lapulapu, a Filipino hero, was believed to
be one of the foremost masters of Arnis, which was known during that time in the native dialect as pangamut. Lapulapu vigorously
trained his men for "showdown" fights against tribal enemies long before his historic battle with Ferdinand Magellan on April
27, 1521, on Mactan Island. When Magellan, the first circumnavigator of the world, tried to subdue the recalcitrant Lapulapu,
the Spaniards were met not with a hail of bullets but with wooden instruments, spears, and bolos. Magellan lost his life in
that battle.
Lapulapu's father, Datu Mangal, most likely brought stickfighting to Mactan Island, and Sri Batugong and
his son Sri Bantung Lumay brought the art to the neighboring island of Sugbu (present day Cebu). Bantug Lumay’s son, Rajah
Humabon, became arch rivals withLapulapu and this feud between local chieftains contributed significantly to early development
of the "old" Arnis. Thus, when Miguel Lopez de Legaspi landed established the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines
in 1565, he and his men noted that the Filipinos were in a class by themselves in the arts of stickfighting and swordfighting. The

original Olympic games held in ancient Greece. In Greek pankration the competitor engaged in hand to hand combat that combined
both striking both striking and grappling skills. Like in modern MMA,in Greek pankration the goal was to submit or incapacitate
the opponent. The most recent beginning of modern MMA, can be traced back to the Vale Tudo competitions held in Brazil
starting in the 1920's. It was these competitions that the Gracie family and their version of Jiu-Jitsu began to gain fame,These
bouts often had a style vs style competent to them, where the practitioners of various martial arts would compete to prove
which martial art was superior to the other. In 1993, Vale Tudo type competition was brought to the USA in part by the
Gracie Family. The competition was run under the name of the and had the goal of proving which martial art was superior to
all other. It was in this competition that a rather frail looking Royce Gracie, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, was able
to dominate all other competitors and capture the championship.Royce Gracie was able to win despite being greatly out sized
by many of his opponents as well as by using a fighting style that was completely different from most American's knew of.It
was a very sobering experience for many when they witnessed the much more powerful and larger strikers becoming seemingly
helpless once Royce Gracie took them to the ground. His use of grappling to dominate much larger opponents would change the
landscape of the UFC forever. Is also helped many practitioners of the more striking centric martial arts to realize they
must effectively learn how to grapple as well as strike to truly to be competent fighters and thus ushered in the modern age
of MMA. MODERN MMA: Today MMA is a sport exploding with popularity. Numerous MMA organizations now exist and it is a
billion dollar a year industry. This increase in popularity can be attributed to a few things, Greatly increased T.V. exposure,
with such show as Spikes's The Ultimate Fighter also Rule changes, making it more acceptable, also a large following on the
internet which help to spread the sport.

WHAT
IS AMATEUR BOXING
Amateur boxing is a very positive sports as well as a terrific way to combat juvenile delinquency.
It is completely different from professional boxing in its goal, objectives, scoring and equipment.
Amateur boxing
can be an excellent source of conditioning for the high school athlete during the off-season. It also provides the option
for a youngster who is not involved in school sports program or dose not desire to participate in team sports. Â Amateur boxing can also provide a young person with the opportunity to satisfy the basic human needs of recognition in a
positive manner. All too often this need is met through delinquent behavior.
In amateur boxing, points are scored
by landing clean blows, regardless of their power.A power punch that knocks an opponent down scores the same as a left jab.
Consequently, a boxer's goal should be to outbox his opponent by landing numerous clean, effective blows rather than going
for a knockout that may not happen.
IS AMATEUR BOXING SAFE?
The safety of amateur boxing has been well
documented. The 1998 National Safety Council ranked boxing 71st in sports injuries, well below mainstream sports like wrestling, football, baseball, soccer
and even bowling. Most of the negative publicity about the sport centers around professional boxing, when, in fact professional
boxing is much different than amateur boxing.
No other amateur sports takes more precautions, in regard to safety,
than amateur boxing. Amateur boxers must receive a physical examination before and each competition.Special protective equipmentÂ
is mandatory for each competition. The primary directive of all amateur referees is the safety of the boxers. In addition,
all competition gloves and headgear contain exact combinations of shock-absorbing foams to reduce the impact of a blow.Every
possible precaution is taken to keep amateur boxing safe.
TEACH YOUR BOXERS THE FOUR C'S OF AMATEUR BOXING:
Coachability: A boxer must have the mental discipline to take instruction that he receives and incorporate it into
his boxing style. Oterwise, he will never improve. Conditioning: It is impossible to learn if a boxer is too tired to
concentrate on new techniques. Most amateur bouts are won and lost due to conditioning. Concentration: If a boxer has
the ability to block out everything and concentrate on the task at hand, he will improve rapidly. CHAMPION: If a boxer
is coachable, in condition and concentrates on his boxing he will be a CHAMPION.
